DESCRIPTION

In this interactive workshop, Dr Lesley-Ann Noel will introduce you to critical theory. By using the Designer's Critical Alphabet, you will reflect on your design process. You will use the reflection points on each card to help understand your work through various critical, inclusive lenses. Together with other participants, you will co-create your own critical alphabet, based on the realities of the work that you do. Finally, you will create individual and collective action plans and manifestoes, and move your design research and practice towards a more inclusive practice.

OUTCOMES

  • Get introduced to critical theory and design practice
  • Reflect on your design (research) process
  • Ask yourself the right questions to make a connection to theory and practice
  • Reflect on difference, by looking at your personal identity and the ones from who you are designing for
  • Create your own critical alphabet: a list of important critical theory concepts
  • Bring an inclusive lens to your design team

FORMAT

The workshop will take place live via Zoom. Remote collaboration will take place in Mural. No previous experience in Mural is needed, however connection via a laptop is recommended.

The total workload is 3 hours. Participants should commit to reflection or post-workshop activities.
